Advertising Photographers
of America
Founded in 1981. Professional trade association dedicated to exchanging information,
resolving problems, and strengthening relationships between photographers, clients and
suppliers. Membership open to companies supplying professional photographers, individuals
who provide support services for photographers, photographers' assistants, educators, and
students. Benefits include a national and local newsletter, the APA National Members
Handbook, forums, and surveys.
American Society of Media
Photographers
Founded in 1944. Membership 5,000+. Organization for established professional freelancers
dedicated to improving the circumstances of the working photographer, cultivating
friendship among professionals, and promoting high standards. Members specialize in media
photography, including editorial, advertising, corporate/industrial, still life,
architectural, high-tech, fashion, and annual report. ASMP's 35 U.S. chapters serve as
support groups, learning centers, and photographers' rights advocates. Membership benefits
include a legal referral system, seminars, insurance, the ASMP Business Bible, the Stock
Handbook, membership directory, White Papers, and the monthly ASMP National
Bulletin. ASMP has several membership categories, all of which require professional
involvement with photography.
International Fire
Photographers Association
Founded in 1964 at the Chicago Fire Academy. Membership 400 professional fire
photographers. Primary objectives are to promote professionalism, specifically in the
fields of fire and investigative photography; to promote harmonious relations between the
fire service, related agencies, and the press through educational publicity; to conduct
seminars and conferences devoted to enhancing techniques and skills in fire photography;
and to utilize fire photography to promote public awareness of fire safety and prevention.
Membership is open to anyone actively engaged, directly or indirectly, in the field or who
has an interest in these activities. Active members, who are entitled to vote, serve on
committees, and hold office, are persons affiliated with the fire service, law
enforcement, or related agencies. Associate members, who do not vote or hold certain
offices but may serve on special committees, are persons who are involved or interested in
fire photography, though not in a professional capacity. Services to all members include a
Fire Photographers Certification Program, training programs for members and photographic
groups interested in basic and advanced fire photography, and the three to four-day Annual
Training Conference, which features classes, a photo contest, and an awards presentation
banquet. Dues are $20 for U.S. members, $22 for Canadian members, $25 for members
overseas.
Photographic Society of
America
Founded in 1934. International organization devoted exclusively to the development and
support of photography as an art and science. PSA is open to photographers of all ages and
levels. It serves more than 8,000 members in about 40 countries and each of the United
States, approximately 50,000 photographers belonging to more than 600 member camera clubs,
and many companies in the photography field. Benefits to individual members include the
services and activities of eight special interest divisions, a subscription to the monthly
PSA Journal, and local chapter events and regional and international conventions.
Competitions and workshops for young people are also offered. The Society bestows awards
for both service and proficiency in the field of photography. Annual individual membership
dues are $40 in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico ($45 outside North America); camera club dues
are 40 ($45).
Professional Photographers
of America
Founded in 1880. Membership 14,000. Organization offers professional photographers and
their employees a variety of membership benefits, including publications, professional
development programs, meetings, conferences, marketing and public relations assistance,
competitions, business services, liability and equipment insurance, resource information,
networking, and special services. Members may join in the activities of 5 special interest
groups: Commercial/Corporate Advertising, Electronic Imaging, Portrait, Art/Tech
(retoucher, lab technician), and Wedding. Publications include the monthly Professional
Photographer and Photo-Electronic Imaging magazines. A degree program that
allows members to earn merits for work and service toward the Master of Photography,
Photographic Craftsman, and Photographic Specialist degrees. PPA schedules an annual
convention and trade show in July, a 4-day marketing and management conference in Las
Vegas, and a variety of seminars and workshops for the special interest groups.
